2023 CATEGORIES
All projects entered must have completed between July 2021 – July 2023 and have real-life imagery to support the entry.
Best Collaborative Arts Project (Static) ENTER HERE
This award will recognise a traditional fine arts project that has had a measurable positive impact on the patient and staff experience within a health or care environment. Entries can include paintings, murals, light installations, sculptures etc – anything that is produced and displayed in its final state.
Entries must:
- Provide an overview of the item or collection
- Explain how it improves the environment and/or patient experience, particularly if meant for a specific patient or resident group
- Explain how it was produced in close collaboration with staff, patients and other stakeholders
- Give an overview of how it was delivered sustainably and within budget
- Provide feedback from stakeholders
Best Collaborative Arts Project (Performance) ENTER HERE
This award will recognise a collaborative participatory arts project that has had a measurable positive impact on the patient and staff experience within a health or care environment. Entries can include performance art, poetry writing, music workshops, art workshops either delivered by arts groups or involving patients and residents themselves.
Entries must:
- Provide an overview of the project
- Explain how it improves the lives of those taking part
- Explain how it was produced in close collaboration with staff and patients
- Give an overview of how it was delivered and how it could be replicated elsewhere
- Provide feedback from stakeholders
Best Interior Design Project (Refurbishment) ENTER HERE
This award will be presented for an outstanding internal space within a refurbishment project that enhances the overall experience of patients, staff, residents, and visitors within a health or social care setting. This can include repainting, artwork, interior design, and internal alterations.
Entries must:
- Provide an overview of the project or intervention
- Explain how it improves on the previous environment
- Explain how it positively impacts staff, patients, residents, and visitors
- Give an overview of how it was delivered sustainably and within budget
- Include feedback from stakeholders
Best Interior Design Project (New Build) ENTER HERE
This award will be presented for an outstanding internal space within a new-build project that enhances the overall experience of patients, staff, residents, and visitors within a health or social care setting. This can include repainting and refurbishment projects, artwork, interior design, and internal alterations.

Best External Environment Project ENTER HERE
This award will be presented for an outstanding external space that enhances the overall experience of patients, staff, and visitors. This can include external building works, landscaping, artwork, and the improvement and creation of external areas such as car parks and public access points.
Entries must:
- Provide an overview of the project or intervention
- Explain how it positively impacts staff, patients and visitors
- Show clear stakeholder engagement throughout the process
- Give an overview of how it was delivered sustainably and within budget
- Include feedback from users
Best Carbon Reduction Initiative ENTER HERE
This award reflects the recent challenge set by the Government for the NHS to become carbon neutral by 2040. The judges will be looking for a single initiative, or series of initiatives, that are helping to reduce energy use and an organisation’s overall carbon footprint, including, but not restricted to, energy-efficient heating and lighting solutions; waste management and recycling projects; and green transport plans. Entries can come from health or social care organisations and their industry partners.
Entries must:
- Provide an overview of the project and its aims
- Give evidence of the positive impact on services
- Give evidence of how this makes services more efficient
- Show collaboration and consultation with stakeholders throughout
- Show how it will impact on wider carbon reduction efforts within the organisation and more widely across the health and care sector
Estates and Facilities Team of the Year ENTER HERE
This award recognises the efforts of estates and facilities teams, both in-house and contractors and across both public and privately-operated health and social care organisations, including hard and soft services, such as laundry, catering, cleaning, infection control; and estates functions including refurbishment, repairs, utilities, carbon reduction etc.
Entries must:
- Show a novel approach that has proved successful and which could be replicated across the sector
- Show clear proof of improvement on existing practises or services
- Show teamwork and collaboration with key stakeholders
- Explain how the work enhances the lives of staff, patients, and visitors
- Provide clear evidence of ongoing evaluation
Best Patient Safety Initiative ENTER HERE
This award reflects the current drive to improve patient safety across health and social care settings. It will be presented to a project in either the health or social care sector that can demonstrate measurable improvements in patient outcomes or a reduction in ‘never events’ and similar problems. This can include projects relating to key issues such as reducing pressure ulcers, cutting down on healthcare associated infections, reducing falls, addressing medication errors, etc.
Entries must:
- Provide an overview of the project and its aims
- Show how the entry has had a significant impact on patient wellbeing and the costs associated with this
- Give evidence of how this makes services more efficient/successful
- Provide feedback from patients and/or patient groups on the impact of the initiative
Best Healthcare Development (UK – value <£10m) ENTER HERE
This award will be presented to an exemplary new-build or refurbishment project valued at less than £10m from the acute, primary, community healthcare sector anywhere in the UK. The judges will be looking for projects that show cleverness, innovation in design and thoughtfulness and which create a positive, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors/carers and staff.
Entries must:
- Show a level of understanding of the specific needs of the patients, staff and visitors who will be using the building and/or ward and unit in question
- Show that, through design, a therapeutic environment has been created for all users, which enhances treatment or work pathways, both inside and outside the building
- Show involvement of patients, staff and other key stakeholders throughout the design and construction process
- Include a floorplan showing the adjacencies within the building or unit
- Show how the design could set a precedent for future developments both in the UK and overseas
- Show consideration of sustainability and carbon reduction and other key service goals
- Provide clear evidence of positive impact

This award will be presented to an exemplary new-build or refurbishment project valued in excess of £10m from the acute, primary, community healthcare sector anywhere in the UK. The judges will be looking for projects that show cleverness, innovation in design and thoughtfulness and which create a positive, supportive and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors/carers and staff.
Entries must:
- Show a level of understanding of the specific needs of the patients, staff and visitors who will be using the building and/or ward and unit in question
- Show that, through design, a therapeutic environment has been created for all users, which enhances treatment or work pathways, both inside and outside the building
- Show involvement of patients, staff, and other key stakeholders throughout the design and construction process
- Include a floorplan showing the adjacencies within the building or unit
- Show how the design could set a precedent for future developments both in the UK and overseas
- Show consideration of sustainability and carbon reduction and other key service goals

Best Mental Health/Dementia Care Development ENTER HERE
This award will be presented to an exemplary new-build or refurbishment project for a dementia of mental health care facility which is designed to support the day-to-day living of people with mental health conditions, Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia. This can include hospital-based ward refurbishments, dedicated psychiatric centres, support centres, or hospitals, both private and public; the creation of dementia-friendly public facilities; or dedicated dementia care homes within community settings. The judges reserve the right to award two separate trophies for new-build and refurbishment projects and for small and large-scale projects across both focus areas
Entries must:
- Show a level of understanding of the specific needs of the patients, residents, staff and visitors who will be using the building
- Show that, through design, a therapeutic environment has been created for all users, both inside and outside the building, which enhances treatment or work pathways
- Show knowledge and understanding of the very-specific design issues impacting on people living with mental health conditions or dementia
- Show involvement of patients, staff, residents, and other key stakeholders throughout the design and delivery process
- Include a floorplan showing the adjacencies within the building
- Show how the design could set a precedent for future developments
- Show consideration of sustainability and carbon reduction
- Provide clear evidence of positive impact

Interior Building Product ENTER HERE
This award will recognise an internal/interior building product that is helping to enhance the health and/or social care estate. Products can include, but are not restricted to, wall, door, window and flooring solutions; cladding; acoustic panels; roofing and ceilings; and radiation panels
Entries must:
- Provide an overview of the product and why it is different from existing solutions already on the market
- Include a full overview of cost, cost savings, and other efficiencies
- Explain how it meets current design drivers, including infection control, cost control, privacy and dignity, ease of maintenance, and carbon reduction
- Provide clear and genuine feedback from estates teams and other users/stakeholders
Best Furniture and Fixtures Product ENTER HERE
This award will recognise an internal building product or fixture/fitting that is helping to enhance the health and/or social care estate. Products can include, but not restricted to, furniture including seating, tables, office furniture, beds, hoists and transfer solutions, and storage solutions; door handles; window restrictors; anti-ligature products; and curtain rails and grab rails.
Entries must:
- Provide an overview of the product and why it is different from existing products on the market
- Give a full overview of cost, associated cost savings and other efficiencies
- Explain how it meets current design drivers, including safety, security, infection control, privacy and dignity, dementia care, and carbon reduction
- Provide feedback from estates teams and other stakeholders
Best Modular/ Mobile Healthcare Facility ENTER HERE
This award will be presented to an exemplary healthcare development across all primary, acute, community care services that has been delivered using modern offsite construction methods. This covers modular and mobile building solutions developed in factory conditions.
Entries must:
- Show how, through use of offsite construction methods, efficiencies have been achieved (i.e through shorter construction times, less disruption, less waste, financial efficiencies etc.)
- Show a level of understanding of the specific needs of the patients, staff, and visitors who will be using the building
- Show that, through design, a therapeutic environment has been created for all users, which enhances treatment or work pathways, both inside and outside the building
- Show involvement of patients, staff and other key stakeholders throughout the design and construction process
- Include a floorplan showing the adjacencies within the building
- Show how the design could set a precedent for future developments within the healthcare sector

The judges will be looking for projects that show cleverness, innovation in design and thoughtfulness and which create a positive, supportive and therapeutic environment for patients, visitors/carers and staff.
Entries must:
- Show a level of understanding of the specific needs of the patients, staff and visitors who will be using the building and/or ward and unit in question
- Show that, through design, a therapeutic environment has been created for all users, which enhances treatment or work pathways, both inside and outside the building
- Show involvement of patients, staff and other key stakeholders throughout the design and construction process

The judges will be looking for projects that show cleverness, innovation in design and thoughtfulness and which create a positive, supportive, and therapeutic environment for patients, customers, visitors/carers and staff.
Entries must:
- Show a level of understanding of the specific needs of the patients, staff, and visitors who will be using the building
- Show that, through design, a therapeutic environment has been created for all users, which enhances treatment or work pathways, both inside and outside the building
- Show involvement of clients, patients, staff, and other key stakeholders throughout the design and construction process
- Include a floorplan showing the adjacencies within the building or unit

This award will recognise a software product designed specifically for use by health and/or social care staff which helps to improve processes and bring about operational efficiencies, for example by improving back-office functions such as staff rotas, expenses, ID authentication etc; improving estates management; enhancing cyber security; or improving knowledge and training.

This award will recognise excellence in technology deployment within the primary and community care sectors, including, but not restricted to, GP clinics, specialist community services (physiotherapy, stroke rehabilitation etc), dental services, district nursing, community mental health services, antenatal/postnatal services, care homes etc. The judges will be looking for entries which show how IT teams and their industry partners have worked together to seamlessly deploy technology so as to achieve measurable efficiencies; and how those deployments have been integrated for the benefit of staff and other users.
