From bathroom to ocean: Tackling aqua toxicity

Ecotoxicology testing is a major challenge for the cosmetics industry – in many ways, it’s the elephant in the room. Ingredients and formulations should be assessed for their impact on ecosystems, both aquatic and terrestrial – but how does this stack up with the animal testing bans in the EU and elsewhere? Carol will provide an update on the current status of ecotox testing, highlighting the example of a new ISO approved cell-based test to replace current acute toxicity tests using live adult and embryonic fish. Other areas of ecotox that have key relevance to current issues in the cosmetics industry will also be explored, including scientific and ethical considerations around testing for coral bleaching effects of sunscreens.
